Space telescope IRIS

Historian: Part of the fun of space science is that there is so much to be learned and the research questions and findings are not so hard for us to understand. One long standing mystery is our Sun's corona, the far outer gas layer. Why is it so much hotter than the body of Sun [link]?

Physicist: This is not just a good puzzle: What happens in our Sun's corona can have effects on us here on Earth. Corona mass ejections can cause great damage to systems here including our electric power supplies and our communication systems. Space telescope IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) studies the interface between our Sun's body and our Sun's corona. There is much for us to learn via IRIS mission sites.
